Travel

Travel in Avalon is similar to most other settings, with peasants and farmers using carts to ferry their wares, pulled by hand or beast of burden. Horses are used as per usual.

Linked Permanent Magic Teleportation Circles/Portals only exist in the major cities in each territory. Back in the day, these were used for trade but fell into disuse when they started to become erratic. No one knows why, but they were deemed forbidden until repairs could be done. When it seemed like they’d stabilised, Queen Titania XII declared that the circles would be used infrequently and only at times of great importance. Overuse, she claimed, caused them to malfunction. Several circles were also deactivated, as the time taken to traverse the distance they spanned my other means (boat, caravan, flight) was inconsequential.

Public permanent teleportation circles were constructed in specifically designed buildings in major trade centres, allowing those with the ritual and the ability to cast it to get traders and travellers to them for a modest fee.
You approach the Portal Keeper with your ritual caster in tow and arrange an appointment – most times people are immediately sent through for their request. The address of the destination is etched around the circle in chalk and its name is intoned. The caster immediately knows how long til the opposing circle will be available for transfer. There is a kind of queue involved, as the circle is “reserved” until the teleport has been made – if a ritual has not been started at the requesting circle before the time is up, then the reservation is lost. Time between uses is usually about an hour, for safetys sake, but 10 minutes of no use each hour is often enough to allow the magic to replenish enough for the next hour.
A pinch of chalk is often thrown back through the portal as a way of ensuring good luck; the chalk dust in consumed by the circles on both sides and serves to help replenish their energies but is not necessary, just polite. Chalk used in these rituals is often kept in residuum bags. This doesnt change the residuum in any way, but the chalk is more magically attuned.
